2011 Summer Special Exhibition "Women and Mount Koya"

Mount Koya is a special place where women were strictly prohibited from entering since its founding in Konin 7 (816) until the Meiji period. Remnants of this rule remain at Jison-in Temple in Kudoyama Town and the Women's Road and Women's Hall surrounding Mount Koya. Many treasures have been donated to Mount Koya since ancient times by women who adored Kobo Daishi Kukai, and by children praying for their mothers' eternal salvation, and temples and memorial towers have been built and are still preserved to this day. Among these women and children are the names of many famous historical figures, such as Bifukumon'in, Hojo Masako, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Ishida Mitsunari.

On the other hand, the land of Koyasan is protected by a female deity. Nyu Myojin (Nyutsuhime) is the local deity of Koyasan, and is enshrined at the Gosha of Danjo Garan and Amano Shrine in Katsuragi Town at the foot of the mountain. Belief in Benzaiten has also been popular since ancient times. In this special exhibition, we will introduce statues of female deities and votive offerings made by women from the precious treasures handed down at Koyasan, with the keyword "women". Women's achievements in modern society are remarkable, and their influence is immeasurable. However, the role that women have played, sometimes taking center stage in history and sometimes as spiritual support, is by no means small throughout the long history of the country. We hope that you will be able to feel the power of women, even if only in fragments, through Koyasan.
