Kobo Daishi Kukai, who founded Mount Koya, spread Shingon Buddhism to the world with the idea of protecting the nation. Protecting the nation is the idea of protecting the country with Buddhist teachings. In Konin 14 (823), Emperor Saga bestowed To-ji Temple (Kyoogokoku-ji Temple) to Kukai as a temple to protect the nation. In the first year of Jowa (834), Kukai also dedicated to Emperor Ninmyo a Go-Nanatsu-Nichi ritual at Shingon-in Temple in the Imperial Palace from Jowa 2 (835), January 8 to 14 to pray for the peace of the nation and the emperor's health. There are records that rituals for protecting the nation were held at Mount Koya, and many related cultural properties still exist.
Therefore, the autumn special exhibition, entitled "Gods and Buddhas Protecting the Nation," will display a number of cultural assets related to the protection of the nation, including Buddhas enshrined in ceremonies praying for the peace of the nation, scriptures for the protection of the nation, and paintings and sculptures of gods and Buddhas who are said to have gone to war to protect the nation.
