"Fire and Mount Koya: Reviving History and Life"

Mount Koya has suffered many fires since its founding in the 7th year of the Kōnin era (816). Each time, our predecessors worked tirelessly to restore the sacred mountain that Kukai had built, and the scenery of Mount Koya today has been preserved and passed down.
The history of the fire can be seen particularly from the remains and artefacts that were unearthed during excavations at Mount Koya, which are buried cultural assets that give a clear picture of life on the mountain at the time of the fire.
Furthermore, the cultural assets that have been passed down at Mount Koya to this day, including sculptures, paintings, crafts, and documents, have all miraculously survived the fire and been preserved and passed down to the present day.
We hope that through these cultural assets, you will have an opportunity to think about the importance of passing them on to future generations.
