This year, Mount Koya will be celebrating its 1200th anniversary since it was founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai. Currently, there are 117 temples on the mountain, including 52 lodging temples (sub-temples and sub-temples). There used to be a much larger number of temples, with around 1865 temples at its peak in the early Edo period, but over the years and through fires and other destruction, it has come to this day.

This exhibition displays a selection of cultural properties, mainly national treasures and important cultural properties, from among the many cultural properties handed down in these temples that have miraculously survived to the present day without being scattered over the course of time or lost in fire. We hope that through these precious cultural properties, you can feel the breath of Koyasan's 1200-year history and the feelings of Kobo Daishi Kukai towards all living beings.
