When talking about Buddhism and "fragrance," some may think of familiar things like incense sticks and incense burning, or at Mt. Koya, the smoke from incense sticks in front of the Okunoin mausoleum, or the incense applied when worshiping inside a great pagoda. In Buddhism and Esoteric Buddhism, which originated in India, "fragrance" plays a variety of roles, such as offering prayers to and pleasing Buddhas, decorating (decorating) the Buddha's space, and purifying it. Its history is very long, and the culture of "fragrance" in Japan has developed since the introduction of Buddhism.
This exhibition focuses on the role of "fragrance" in Buddhism and esoteric Buddhism, and displays treasures related to "fragrance" that have been handed down at Mount Koya.
