2020 Summer Special Exhibition "Nyorai"

"Nyorai" means "the enlightened one" and is the highest rank of Buddha, so it has attracted the faith of many people since ancient times. Well-known Buddhas include Dainichi Nyorai, who is located at the center of the mandala, Amida Nyorai, who leads to the Pure Land, and Yakushi Nyorai, who grants good health and freedom from illness, and at Koyasan, they are mainly enshrined as the principal image of temples. Koyasan Reihokan Museum has a variety of these Nyorai statues as well as many cultural assets related to Nyorai.
This exhibition will display some of the most exquisite cultural assets from our museum's collection.

The term Nyorai means the being that attained spiritual enlightenment in Buddhism. Since Nyorai is ranked at the supreme class in the hierarchy of Buddha's world, Nyorai has been attracting pious people from ancient time. Dainichi Nyorai, who is placed in the center of Mandara, Amida Nyorai, who leads people to the Pure Land, and Yakushi Nyorai, who cures diseases and gives good health, are the representatives. Those deities are often enshrined as the main images of the temples. In the history, various works of Buddhist art, which captures high virtue of Nyorai, have been created. The exhibition showcases such precious works for all the quests.
