Mount Koya, founded by Kobo Daishi, has a custom of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism, and many gods are enshrined there. The most representative of these is the shrine in the temple complex. Enshrined there are four shrines, including Nyu and Koya Myojin, the local deity of Mount Koya who is said to have been involved in the founding of the temple, and Thirty-five Gods, who are said to protect the 30th of each month on a rotating basis. The Shingon sect, founded by Kobo Daishi, also incorporates Indian gods as heavenly Buddhas.
This exhibition will focus on Mount Koya and the gods worshipped in the Koyasan Shingon sect.
