About me
This year marks the third time that the Koyasan Reihokan Museum has held a sacred treasure exhibition. The first was "Kobo Daishi and Mount Koya", the second was "Mandala Art", and this year's theme is "Wrathful Statues of Esoteric Shingon Buddhism".
This exhibition will feature wrathful statues of Acala, Gozanze and Aizen Myo-o, among other Buddhist paintings, sculptures and crafts that have been objects of worship throughout the 1,000-year history of Mount Koya, the center of Esoteric Shingon Buddhism.
Among the various deities surrounding the Tathagata, the supreme Buddha, are gentle bodhisattva figures on the one hand and wrathful figures of the Kyoryorin body on the other, which are characteristic of esoteric Buddhism.
Deities such as Fudo Myo-o, who has a frightening appearance but is deeply compassionate at heart, have become objects of deep faith for the Japanese, creating a distinctive style of Japanese Buddhism not found in either India or China.
I believe that this time the rich content, including national treasures and important cultural properties, will appeal to visitors.
