Since Kobo Daishi Kukai entered eternal meditation at the Okunoin Mausoleum on Mount Koya in 835, the faith of those who admire him has taken on various forms.
The belief in Kobo Daishi is based on the idea that Mount Koya is the world of the Ryōkai Mandala, centered on Dainichi Nyorai. It is a combination of the Maitreya belief that Maitreya Bodhisattva will be reborn at Mount Koya 5,670,000,000 years after the death of Shakyamuni, and the belief in Amida Pure Land (Western Paradise) of Amida Nyorai, and has been passed down in various forms to the present day.
This exhibition focuses on the ossuary faith that forms the foundation of these practices, introducing various cultural assets that reflect this faith and tracing its evolution.
