In the central part of Mount Koya, there is a temple called Kongobu-ji.
Originally, Kongōbu-ji was not the name of a specific building or site, but rather a name referring to the entire Mount Kōya. However, in 1868, Seigan-ji, one of the sub-temples of Mount Kōya, changed its name to Kongōbu-ji, and the following year it merged with Kōzan-ji. As a result, Kongōbu-ji became the representative temple of Mount Kōya.
Thus, the name "Kongōbu-ji" has two meanings: it can refer to the building itself, or it can refer to the entire Mount Kōya area. As a building, Kongōbu-ji was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2024 in recognition of its historical value.
The treasures that have been passed down through generations at Kongobu-ji Temple, a temple with such a rich history and prestige, will be gathered in this exhibition. Please enjoy the world of treasures that have been preserved and passed down alongside the history of Kongobu-ji Temple.
