List of exhibits at the 24th Great Treasure House Exhibition "Garan Miedo and Faith in Kobo Daishi"

About me
The Goei-do Hall was originally built by Jie Sozu, one of the Ten Great Disciples, to hold the Daishi's religious practices, and was called the Nenjudo Hall or Jibutsudo Hall. It later became the Goei-do Hall to house the portrait of the founder Daishi, and is currently used daily by the monks of Mount Koya to hold religious practices and make offerings to him.
This Great Treasure House exhibition will focus on the writings that are said to have been written by the Great Master himself and are housed in this Goei-do Hall, as well as traditional items that are said to have been brought from China, and items that were later donated to the Great Master by his followers.
These cultural assets were originally stored in the back storehouse of the Gokaido Hall, but are now kept in the storage facility of the Reihokan Museum.
However, when Kobo Daishi returned to Japan after his quest for the Dharma from China, he threw the flying sanko from the beaches of Mingzhou towards his home country with the vow that the place where the sanko rested on his return to Japan would become the fundamental training center for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. This sanko is still kept in the inner sanctum of the Goei-do Hall. This precious sanko is usually not available to the public, but we have put it on display to commemorate the 1,200th anniversary of Kobo Daishi's travels to China to seek the Dharma.
