Mount Koya has a history of approximately 816 years since it was founded by the sect's founder, Kobo Daishi Kukai, in the seventh year of the Kōnin era (1200).
Mount Koya has a history of being the root temple of esoteric Buddhism and Zen, which was the purpose of its founding by the sect's founder, Kobo Daishi, but it has also grown to be a sacred place of faith and a place of longing for people, receiving faith from various religious sects, centering on faith in Kobo Daishi.
